Mark Bernes (1911-1969), a singer and film actor, People's Artist of the RSFSR, was born on September 21 (September 8, old style), 1911. Bernes became popular after he played soldier Arkady Dzyubin in the film “The Two Soldiers” (1943). The song “Dark Night” Bernes performed in the film became a classic example of the Russian song lyrics. Bernes played in films “The Miners,” “Man with a Rifle,” “The Fighter Planes,” “The Great Life,” “The Turning Point,” “Third Impact,” “Night Patrol,” “Taras Shevchenko,” “School of Courage,” “They Were the First,” etc. From 1950, Bernes performed as a crooner.
