It is common belief that global warming leads to more famines and fire risks. However, new data show that climate changes can lead to vegetation type shifts to more fire-resistant species, or their decrease, according to Montana university scientists. "Climate is just one of the factors determining the frequency of fires. If you take into consideration climate alone while predicting fire frequency change, you are most likely making a mistake, if the the vegetation type does not change with the climate. However, the type of vegetation changes with the climate, and it is momentous for fire frequency prediction", says Fillip Jigera who with his colleagues studied the history of vegetation in North Alaska in the last 15 thousand years by analyzing lake sediment. While studying pollen and spores in the sediment, the scientists managed to trace the prevailing vegetation type in the region throughout the millennia. The scientists hope their work will help predict future natural fires related to climate changes.23.04.2009#389024
