The Grand Hall of the Petrovsky Stopover Palace reopened after 10 year-long restoration. Designed by Matvei Kozakov, the palace was built in 1776-1780 on the order of Catherine the Great to commemorate Russia's victory in the war against Turkey, and was used by the court for a respite after the journey from Petersburg to Moscow. Restorers restored 80 unique fresco paintings from the Assumption of the Virgin Church on Voltovo field, Veliky Novgorod. The sizes of some fresco paintings are several square meters and according to scientist belong to an unknown student of Feofan Grek. The church was constructed in 1352. During the Great Patriotic War the church was completely ruined and fresco paintings fell. The restoration of the church and frescoes started due to a Russian-German project. The opening ceremony of the church was held on August 08, 2003. That winter the work on fresco restoration saw its beginning.
