Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni who got married last year were making their admirers happy both together and separately. The French president sued Tear Prod for the illegal use of his image. For two months, the company's publshers K&B have been selling scandallous voodoo dolls as an appendic to a booklet with Sarkozy's humorous biography, and a witch manual with a set of 12 needles. In late October, a PARIS court of higher instance refused to ban a Nicolas Sarkozy voodoo doll, having considered appropriate this humorous image of the head of state. A Paris appeals court allowed the sale of dolls but ordered Tear Prod to add a warning label on the box describing the doll as an "offence to the dignity of the president." Sarkozy's wife was luckier. A Paris court of the higher instance ordered Pardon to pay Carla Bruni 40,000 Euros in moral damages for the sale of hand bags with her naked image, and demand "an immediate end to the direct or indirect dissemination of the dubious subject." The court ruled that the company had not received her permission to use her image in public. Her white-and-black image was shot by photographer Michel Comte when she was a professional model. The idea is that it imitates "The Model" which Georges Seurat painted a hundred years before. She is depicted with her hair brushed back, her feet turned inside, and her hands covering the bottom of her belly in a chaste antique manner. The photo's original was sold at New York's Christie's for $91,000, which was almost 30 times higher than its pre-sale estimate.
