Normandie-Niemen squadron visits Soviet Union

Members of the Normandie-Niemen squadron of the French Air Force, who are on a visit to the Soviet Union, laying wreaths at a memorial plaque on the façade of a building on Kropotkinskaya Embankment in Moscow commemorating the French pilots of the Normandie-Niemen squadron who fell in World War II. During WWII, this building accommodated a French military mission. The memorial plaque was unveiled in May 1956. It has the names of 42 French pilots engraved on it and an inscription in Russian and in French saying “In memory of the French pilots of the Normandie-Niemen squadron who fell in World War II, fighting side by side with Russian warriors.” The squadron fought on a vast territory, from Eastern Prussia to the Moscow Region, making 5,300 combat flights and 869 air fights and shooting down 268 jets.
