October 22, 2002. On October 22, 1987, poet Iosif Brodsky was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature and became the fifth Russian author to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature after Ivan Bunin, Mikhail Sholokhov, Boris Pasternak and Alexander Solzhenitsyn. In his Nobel lecture, Brodsky noted in conclusion that the art of writing poetry was a colossal accelerator of conscience, thinking and world outlook. He noted that, by experiencing this acceleration once, people are no longer able to refuse to repeat this experience, and that they come to depend on this process. I believe that a person who depends on the language in this way is called a poet, Brodsky noted. Reproduction of RIA Novosti photo.
