Butyagin, a prominent Russian scholar, was detained in Poland in December 2025 at Ukraine's request for allegedly conducting illegal archaeological excavations in Crimea. He has authored numerous scientific publications, including on the ancient city of Myrmekion, which was founded by Ionian Greeks in Crimea in the mid-6th century BC.
