

Renowned Russian archaeologist Alexander Butyagin, who was released from a Polish prison, talks to the media during a news conference at the State Hermitage Museum, in St. Petersburg, Russia. Butyagin, a prominent Russian scholar, was detained in Poland in December 2025 at Ukraine's request for allegedly conducting illegal archaeological excavations in Crimea. He has authored numerous scientific publications, including on the ancient city of Myrmekion, which was founded by Ionian Greeks in Crimea in the mid-6th century BC.
