A worker operates an excavator to restore clean sand on a beach by the Black Sea, in Anapa, Krasnodar Region, Russia. On December 15, 2024, the Federal Agency for Sea and Inland Water Transport said that two fuel-laden tankers, Volgoneft 212 and Volgoneft 239, had wrecked in the Kerch Strait during a storm. The tankers were estimated to carry about 9,200 tonnes of fuel oil, of which about 3,700 tonnes leaked into the sea. During the clean-up operation following the spill, approximately 185,000 tonnes of contaminated sand and soil were removed from beaches in the Anapa area. To restore the beaches, an additional layer of sand will be added. This technology has proven its effectiveness at a test site near the village of Vityazevo, in the suburb of Anapa.
