

Servicemen carry a wreath during a flower-laying ceremony commemorating the 37th anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet forces from Afghanistan, at the Memorial Complex "To the Sons of the Motherland – Eternal Memory" in Chisinau, Moldova. Under the April 1988 Geneva agreements, the Soviet Union started the withdrawal of its forces from Afghanistan on May 15, 1988, which was completed on February 15, 1989. According to official sources, over 14,000 Soviet soldiers and officers were killed in action during the war, which officially lasted 9 years.
