

Cadets of the Vladivostok branch of the Nakhimov Naval School lay flowers at the Monument to Primorye Soldiers Who Died During Local Wars and Military Conflicts during a ceremony commemorating the 37th anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet forces from Afghanistan, in Vladivostok, Russia. Under the April 1988 Geneva agreements, the Soviet Union started the withdrawal of its forces from Afghanistan on May 15, 1988, which was completed on February 15, 1989. According to official sources, over 14,000 Soviet soldiers and officers were killed in action during the war, which officially lasted 9 years.
