

A flag of the 1979-1989 Soviet–Afghan War flies during a flower-laying ceremony commemorating the 37th anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet forces from Afghanistan, at the Monument of Glory to Siberian Warriors in Novosibirsk, Russia. Under the April 1988 Geneva agreements, the Soviet Union started the withdrawal of its forces from Afghanistan on May 15, 1988, which was completed on February 15, 1989. According to official sources, over 14,000 Soviet soldiers and officers were killed in action during the war, which officially lasted 9 years.
