Russian Deputy Defence Minister Viktor Goremykin attends a ceremony to hand over a Gold Star medal of the Hero of Russia to descendants of WWII Red Army officer Alexei Berest in Moscow, Russia. On July 17, Russian President Vladimir Putin posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Russia to Alexei Berest who participated in raising the Victory Standard over the Reichstag building in Berlin in April 1945 together with his subordinates Meliton Kantaria and Mikhail Yegorov, but during his lifetime never received the highest Soviet award. Native to Kharkiv region, Berest was awarded with the title of Hero of Ukraine in 2005.
