Russian Presidential Aide Vladimir Medinsky hands over a Gold Star medal of the Hero of Russia to grandson of WWII Red Army officer Alexei Berest, Alexei Berest during a ceremony in Moscow, Russia. On July 17, Russian President Vladimir Putin posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Russia to Alexei Berest who participated in raising the Victory Standard over the Reichstag building in Berlin in April 1945 together with his subordinates Meliton Kantaria and Mikhail Yegorov, but during his lifetime never received the highest Soviet award. Native to Kharkiv region, Berest was awarded with the title of Hero of Ukraine in 2005.
