

Vladimir Stasov was an outstanding art historian, art and music critic. For more than 50 years he worked at the Public Library in St Petersburg. In 1872 he was appointed head of the Art Department, then repeatedly served as head of the library. He was one of the most influential figures in the artistic life of the post-reform era, an ideologist of the Peredvizhniki Society and the Mighty Handful.
