

Members of an expedition from the Specialized Design Bureau for Automated Marine Exploration Systems of the Far Eastern Branch of the Soviet Academy of Sciences are using devices, developed by the Specialized Design Bureau for Marine Seismic and Acoustic Systems and those from the Sonar Systems Department of the Sakhalin Comprehensive Research and Development Institute of the Far Eastern Research Center of the Soviet Academy of Sciences (now the Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences) to study the seabed relief and water circulation specifics in the coastal zone of Sakhalin Island. This photo shows the Moneron multi-armed starfish (Plazaster borealis) inhabiting Moneron Island in the Tatar Strait, 43 kilometers from the south-western Sakhalin coast.
