

World War Two veteran Ivan Alekseev, 99, read a newspaper at his house in the village of Tarasovka, Chelyabinsk Region, Russia. Alekseev was drafted into military service in 1943. He liberated the Chernigov, Sumy and Poltava regions and suffered a serious shrapnel wound during the battles to liberate Belarus. His left leg could not be saved. After being discharged, he worked as a projectionist for 20 years. Alekseev has a son and a daughter, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, and in spare time tends his garden, preserves vegetables and enjoys driving his car.
