

World War Two veteran Ivan Alekseev, 99, puts on his medals at his house in the village of Tarasovka, Chelyabinsk Region, Russia. Alekseev was drafted into military service in 1943. He liberated the Chernigov, Sumy and Poltava regions and suffered a serious shrapnel wound during the battles to liberate Belarus. His left leg could not be saved. After being discharged, he worked as a projectionist for 20 years. Alekseev has a son and a daughter, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, and in spare time tends his garden, preserves vegetables and enjoys driving his car.
