Fragments of the Soviet WWII fighter were found in Karelia in 1992 and transported to Novosibirsk. The production and restoration of the aircraft structural elements were carried out by the Chkalov Novosibirsk Aviation Plant and Aviarestavratsiya company. The final assembly, ground and flight tests of the I-16 took place at the Siberian Aviation Research Institute named after Chaplygin.
