In April 1986, a nuclear power unit exploded at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the Ukrainian SSR. After the accident, authorities decided not to go ahead with the Minsk Nuclear Power Plant, now the Minsk Thermal Power Plant No. 5, construction project in the town of Dtruzhny in the Belarusian SSR (that was being prepared).
