The view shows the preserved sextant of the Ulugh Beg Observatory, one of the most significant observatories of the Middle Ages, in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. It was built in the 1420s by the Timurid astronomer Ulugh Beg. The observatory was destroyed in 1449 and rediscovered in 1908.
