A memorial plate in honor of the German astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel was installed in Kaliningrad in 1975 on a hill near the former Königsberg Observatory. The inscription on the plate says: "Outstanding German scientist, astrologer, geodesist and mathematician, reformer of practical astronomy, honorary member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences.
