In 1989, Soviet miners staged all-out strikes for the first time in the country's history. In the spring of 1989, Vorkuta was the venue for the first strike at Severnaya (Northern) mine. The strikes escalated into a hunger strike. The strikers coordinated their demands at Vorgashorskaya Mine and subsequently presented them to members of a government commission who arrived in Vorkuta.
