On December 7, 1988, the devastating magnitude 10 earthquake in Soviet Armenia totally destroyed the city of Spitak and 80 percent of Leninakan (currently Gyumri), the republic's second largest city. Donations are collected at the Sheikh Muslihiddin mosque in Leninabad (currently Khujand).
