

On December 7, 1988, the devastating magnitude 10 earthquake in Soviet Armenia totally destroyed the city of Spitak and 80 percent of Leninakan (currently Gyumri), the republic's second largest city. A. Mkrtchyan, an air traffic controller at Zvartnots airport in Yerevan, receives flights carrying aid to the people of Armenia.
