The Porkkala Udd Peninsula. A woodworking shop built by the USSR and transferred to the possession of Finland. Under the terms of the armistice agreement signed on September 19, 1944 the Porkkala Udd Peninsula with its water area was leased by Finland to the USSR. The latter planned to set up its naval base there. Although the Soviet lease for Porkkala had been conceded for 50 years, Soviet government returned the area earlier and withdrew its troops from there. The final agreement on returning the peninsula to Finland was signed on January 26, 1956.
