Yakut ASSR. The capital of the republic, Yakutsk, is the only large city built on permafrost. Here, all the houses stand on deeply driven reinforced concrete piles so that the permafrost does not thaw from the heat of the buildings and the loose soils (sandstones, pebbles and clay) do not lose their solidity and do not shift.
