

The township of Niya (Niya railways station of the Eastern Siberian Railways), Ust-Kut district of the Irkutsk region, was founded in 1974 as a residential town for Baikal-Amur Mainline builders. It was built by workers form the Georgian SSR. On February 23, 1981., the township was commissioned and residents of barracks moved into new residences.
