Nikos Karavias, Duke of Naxos Nicolas Michel Laurent Karavias De La Roche-Barozzi, a descendant of the aristocracy of the Republic of Venice, left, opens an ancient chapel in the monastery of St.George of Grotta, in Naxos, island of Naxos of the Cyclades archipelago, Greece. His ancestors helped Count Orlov in the establishment of the Archipelago province in the Cyclades in 1770-1774. The expedition "Flame of Chesma. The Greek Gambit" of the Russian Geographical Society, following in the footsteps of the 18th century Archipelago expedition to the Eastern Mediterranean, explores the islands of the Aegean Sea which were part of the Russian Archipelago province formed in 1770 after the defeat of the Ottoman Fleet in the Battle of Chesma, and the underwater area where ships of the Russian fleet were based, and subsequently destroyed.
