On December 7, 1988, a terrible earthquake in the Armenian SSR with a force of 10 completely destroyed the city of Spitak and the second largest city in the Republic, Leninakan (now Gyumri), by 80 percent. Other cities and villages in the north of Armenia were also affected. Seven hundred children were brought for treatment to the Polyana children's sanatorium near Moscow.
