The Kazakh SSR. A Proton-K launch vehicle with the Phobos-2 spacecraft on a launch pad of the Baikonur Cosmodrome. The rocket lifted off on July 12, 1988. Phobos automatic inter-planetary probes were designed to study Mars and its Phobos attendant satellite under the Phobos international space project.
