Chukotka Autonomous District. The Bering Bridge Soviet-American polar expedition led by Dmitry Shparo and Paul Schurke. Some 12 skiers left Anadyr on March 7, 1989, covered over 1,200 miles via 16 Chukotka villages, the Bering Strait and 14 communities in Alaska to finish their journey in the Alaskan town of Kotzebue on May 11, 1989. Journalists, television and film crews are seen interviewing expedition members in a village along the way.
