

In 1989, Soviet miners staged the first open mass strikes in the country. IN the spring of 1989, Vorkuta was the venue for the first strike at Severnaya (Northern) mine that escalated into a hunger strike. Activists gathered at Vorgashorskaya mine, now Vorkutaugol-Vorgashorskaya Mine, and listed demands, voiced at a meeting with members of a government commission who arrived in Vorkuta.
