

Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. A terrible 10 magnitude earthquake occurred on December 7, 1988, completely destroyed the city of Spitak and destroyed 80% of the republic's second largest city, Leninakan (now Gyumri). The earthquake affected 40% of the Armenian territory. Some 514,000 people lost their homes; many children lost their parents. However, all children came back to school in the new academic year.
