Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. A terrible 10 magnitude earthquake occurred on December 7, 1988, completely destroyed the city of Spitak and destroyed 80% of the republic's second largest city, Leninakan (now Gyumri). The earthquake affected 40% of the Armenian territory. Some 514,000 people lost their homes; many children lost their parents. Many families like this Mkhitaryan family, took the children in.
