Hunters transport killed walrus along the Bering Sea coast, in Chukotka Autonomous Area, Russia. The walrus was subjected to serious hunting in 18-19 centuries. That led to a sharp decline in the population. That's why commercial production of walruses is currently prohibited by law in all countries where it was common. In limited numbers, hunting is allowed to indigenous, native peoples. Traditionally, all parts of the extracted walrus are used. While modern technologies provide a substitute for many aspects of walrus use, its meat is still a necessary part of the diet of indigenous peoples. Tusk crafts are an important part of folklore and earnings for many communities.
