Fort Ross is a former Russian outpost which was the hub of the southernmost Russian settlements in North America from 1812 to 1842. It was established as an agricultural base from which the northern settlements could be supplied with food and carry on trade. In addition to farming and manufacturing, the Russian-American Company carried on its fur-trading business. Now Fort Ross is a part of Fort Ross State Historic Park.
