The 150-meter-high cross is pictured over the Valley of the Fallen monument near El Escorial, outside Madrid, Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2018, where the basilica houses the tomb of former Spanish dictator Francisco Franco. The monument has been built to be a "national act of atonement and reconciliation" and contains the remains of more than 30,000 people who fought on both sides of the civil war. On September 24 Spain's supreme court is expected to announce whether General Franco's remains can be exhumed from the tomb in the Valley of the Fallen where they have lain since his death in 1975.
