Whooper swans float on the waters of Lebedinoe (Swan) Lake, some 220 km south-east of Barnaul, Altai Krai region, Russia. In winter, hundreds of swans migrate for wintering over to Lebedinoe Lake, the only non-freezing lake in Altai Krai region. Warm springs heat the water so the lake doesn't freeze even when the temperature drops to around minus 40 degrees Celsius, helping swans to survive the severe cold.
