The Battle for Stalingrad has become one of the main events in the biography of the military leader. Having been put in command of the South-Eastern front, operating in the south part of Stalingrad, the then Col.-Gen. Andrei Yeremenko gathered the available resources into a powerful force, and mounted a counterattack on August 9, 1942. By doing so he thwarted the Nazi attempt to break into the city from the south-west.
