

Izbornik of Svyatoslav (1073) is a medieval encyclopedia compiled in the Byzantine Empire in the 9th century and translated into Slavic in the 10th. This copy of the manuscript was made for Prince Svyatoslav Yaroslavich (1027-1076) at one of the book-copying shops in Kiev. It contains entries on astronomy, philosophy, physics, medicine, geography, history, law, ethics, and aesthetics. It is lavishly illustrated with original miniatures and headpieces. The manuscript was found in the Voskresensky Monastery outside Moscow in 1817. From a collection of the State Museum of History in Moscow.
