Russian revolutionary with democratic views, writer, philosopher, and publicist Alexander Herzen (1812-1870). In 1855 he started publishing abroad his almanac Polyarnaya Zvezda (Polar Star), and in 1856, he launched together with Nikolai Ogaryov the newspaper Kolokol (Bell). These publications laid the beginning of the free Russian press, and were very popular.
