

The Baltic Way event on August 23, 1989, on the day of the 50th anniversary of the non-aggression treaty between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany (the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact). Residents of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, constituent republics of the Soviet Union, formed a human chain streching from Vilnuis to Tallinn demonstrating their desire to secede from the USSR.
