On November 17, 1970, Luna 17 Soviet unmanned spacecraft soft landed on the Moon in the Sea of Rains with Lunokhod 1 lunar rover. The image was taken on February 17, 1971 by the rover's on-board telephotometer. The image shows a panoramic view of the lunar surface one kilometer away from the landing platform.
