

Chief of Staff of the Kiev Military District Maj-Gen Nikolai Antoshkin (Aviation) takes part in the early efforts to eliminate the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. In the first ten days he personally directed the attempts of the personnel to close the reactor. Having flown over it, Antoshkin received a high radiation dose. In 1986 he was awarded the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star Medal.
