Moscow, Russia. The Intercession Cathedral on the Moat (St. Basil's Cathedral) is among the most famous and popular monuments of old Russian architecture. The cathedral was built in 1555-1561 on orders from Russian Tsar Ivan the Terrible to commemorate the capture of Kazan and the defeat of the Kazan Khanate on Intercession Day (early October 1552).
