The Sino-Soviet border conflict at Damansky Island on March 2-15, 1969. The commander of the Nizhne-Mikhaylovskaya border outpost junior sergeant Yuri Babansky was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union and decorated with the Gold Star medal and the Order of Lenin for his heroism during the conflict.
