A detail of the Spangled Room in the Chinese Palace, built by architect Antonio Rinaldi in Oranienbaum (Lomonosov in the Soviet years) outside St. Petersburg in the 18th century. The wall panels are embroidered with chenille against a glass bead background to produce the impression of glistening gems. The twelve Rococo panels were made after Serafino Barozzi's sketches in 1762-64.
