Island Valaam on Lake Ladoga in the Russian northwest--the site of a monastery, one of Russia's most cherished shrines. This old tree is known as Shishkin Pine after Ivan Shishkin, 19th century classic landscape painter, depicted it in one of his best-known canvases, "The Pine of Valaam".
